A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture entitled “The Importance of Inland Waterways to U.S. Agriculture” has been released.
The report finds that, due to its efficiencies and lower costs, the inland waterways system saves between $7 and $9 billion annually over the costs of shipping by other modes. The infrastructure, however, is aging and needs major rehabilitation and construction to restore it to its full capability and forestall major disruptions, while providing opportunities for growth.

This is perhaps another way to get the attention of Congress to fund rehabilitation and construction on our infrastructure.
